Marukame Udon – Downtown, HI

Yay! I got to try the downtown location the other week. For my review of the Waikiki location, click here. I grabbed takeout since I wasn’t staying long and wow! Their takeout is so nice! Although I did wonder how it would work if you wanted to grab tempura. I didn’t see takeout boxes for that so I didn’t grab any. Their bags for takeout are high quality handle bags! Fancy stuff. This time, I tried their special Garlic Chicken Udon Salad.

Delicious Garlic Chicken Udon Salad!

Since the dish is cold, the noodles are very firm which I like. The dressing works perfectly with this dish too! Give it a try!

Sushi Company – McCully, HI

Sushi Company has been around since 1999 but I only got to try it very recently! I really have no excuse, it’s such a short drive from my workplace but I never had motivation to go. I’ve seen a few pictures pop up on Yelp which makes their food look mighty good and they have great prices so I had to give them a try. So how did it go? The parking lot is a bit awkward but luckily they are the only one open at lunch time so I think they have ample parking. Parking at night? They have the new Izakaya Torae Torae next door so that will definitely be a bit of a nightmare. Sushi Company knows they are in the grab and go business and they adhere to it. I got my order within five minutes of ordering – I thought that was awesome.

140514-01Garlic Chicken Bento – $6.40

140514-03

140514-02

140514-04How was the bento? Not bad. Great price. The chicken was good, not tender but not overly hard so it was fine to eat. I think they cook it ahead of time and keep it heated – there’s no way I could have gotten my bento so quick if they had fried it fresh. What did I notice after eating the bento? MSG attack. They definitely use MSG in their food, my mouth/throat was dry all afternoon.

140514-05Spicy Ahi Don – $7.25

140514-06

140514-07I thought the way they make their spicy ahi looks so delicious. I don’t know why, maybe it’s the red fish eggs. How was it? Pretty good. Not the best spicy ahi I have ever had but definitely not bad.

You Hungry? – Honolulu, HI

You Hungry? has been around for a few years now but has moved locations a few times (or have they expanded?). I had a meeting in the downtown/Kakaako area and we had to drop in when we drove past this truck! It’s located in a parking lot and it was pretty busy! Everyone must know they’re there. Let’s get to the food!

140408-01Here’s the menu for the day. The prices are great!

140408-02Furikake Mahi Mahi and Garlic Chicken Combo – $8.25

140408-03

140408-04My co-worker had this plate and she actually enjoyed the fish more than the chicken! I don’t know if you can tell but the fish was cooked perfectly, very moist! The chicken was just all right.

140408-05Roast Pork with Fresh Rosemary – $6.00

140408-06

140408-07$6.00 is a steal! It comes with salad and very generous portions of rice and meat. How was it? S-A-L-T-Y. I was so disappointed. I should have thrown this out but I’m Chinese and can’t. The meat itself was heavily seasoned when it was first cooked – then you add dark brown gravy on top? It was all too much. I wouldn’t recommend this dish at all. My original dish was not available so this was my second choice.

Kanak Attack – Honolulu, HI

I heard there used to be a Kanak Attack food truck in town but it closed down. I saw this Nimitz location on Yelp and I’m not sure if it’s the same owner but it’s the same name! I didn’t actually come in here myself but my coworker was picking up lunch so I got my lunch there too! She got me the garlic chicken plate – check it out!

140305-01

140305-02Pretty delicious! I didn’t get the plate fresh but it was still good! Comes with two scoops of rice, salad and garlic chicken morsels. They were boneless and I’m pretty sure all thigh meat. It tasted very good! I would definitely try this place again – it’s too bad I don’t work near here.
