Bob’s Bar-B-Que

I have lived in Kalihi almost all my life and I’ve visited Bob’s maybe once before this visit.  I can’t believe it.  So I got to try this place twice in the past month to try out their dishes.  I see why they are so busy all the time, finger licking greasy plate lunches are always popular.

I wasn’t sure what to try so I went for the BBQ Ribs.  Yeah, I really didn’t know their system.  This is their combo plate with the fried shrimp.  Look at the size of that rib.  It’s insane.  My experience was just all right.  The portion is crazy big but if the quality isn’t there, is it worth it?  The ribs I got were super dry, I expect rib meat to be luscious and falling off the bone.  It was hard to get the meat off the bone and the meat on the edges of these ribs were rock hard.

I figured I got the wrong dish so when I went back, I tried the BBQ short ribs and those were definitely better.  Oh!  And it was only in my second visit that I realized what their ordering system was.  “Snack” is considered to be their mini plate and Dinner is I guess their regular plate?  The thing is, their “snack” size is the size of a regular plate lunch in all other places (meaning you get two scoops of rice, mac salad/toss and your meat) so the dinner size…must be HUGE.  I don’t think I’ll be coming as a regular but will definitely give Bob’s a try once in a while.  Too many food choices in Kalihi, the hidden food mecca to stick to one place!

The Pig and the Lady

Here is my hotly anticipated post for The Pig and the Lady.  Ha!  Here is the huge tent they have.  Have you ever been to their tent?  They’ve got quite a system going on there!  There must have been about 10 people working the food line – all of them are so nice.  The cashier was wonderful even though they are so busy, she was not at all frazzled.  The person who gave out food was very friendly too and I think service makes such a big difference in the dining experience.  And I’m not talking anything over the top, they were just genuinely nice people so it made the experience all the better.

Okay customer service lecture done.  How cute is that piggy hanging on their tent?  Hehe….

Honolulu Farmers’ Market – Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall

Don’t you love how Farmers’ Markets are now like basically an excuse to eat so much ono food?  I do.  I appreciate the fresh fruits and veggies but I appreciate the food even more!  I’ve been wanting to try the Honolulu Farmers’ Market for a while now, the list of food vendors is killer!  The Pig and the Lady is the place I’ve wanted to try for the longest time!  I did get to try it this trip but will post the pictures and review of them in a separate post (they deserve it!).  Do you have any favorite farmers’ markets?

Tenkaippin Ramen

Tenkaippin Ramen is a big chain ramen restaurant in Japan and I heard that they are very particular about their recipes.  I also heard the owner of this restaurant was able to convince them to franchise this location in Hawaii, I don’t know how he pulled this off but I’m grateful he did.  I’ve been to this restaurant a few times over the years and I agree with reviewers, the restaurant has changed in quality over the years.  Have you noticed the Ultimate Japan shows they play in the restaurant?  Well if you didn’t know, the hosts of the show are also the owners of this restaurant!  In the beginning of my visits here, I would see the owners around helping out but lately, they are almost never around…which I think changes the dynamic of the place.

I tried Tenkaippin a few months ago just to try the food again.  I got my favorite Kotteri Ramen and it was as good as it always was.  I feel the food is still good and consistent in taste.  When I went to Japan, I found a Tenkaippin in Shinjuku and tried it.  Oh boy did I prefer the one in Hawaii…is that weird to say?  The broth in Shinjuku was incredibly salty and I just couldn’t enjoy it as much as I do in Hawaii.

Baked Spaghetti

Short update for today, I usually line up a few posts at a time so I have been slacking!  Here’s a quick picture of a Baked Spaghetti I did on a Sunday a while back.  I love this Baked Spaghetti recipe and it’s been a big hit to people I serve it to!  It’s gooey and delicious…perfect for that lazy Sunday.  If anyone is interested in the recipe, I’d be more than happy to share it.

Sweet E’s Cafe

I love breakfast food, don’t you??  That would explain why I have posted breakfast two days in a row.  I really wish McDonald’s would carry breakfast all day long, I bet they would make so much more money.  I’d take their breakfast platters over the other food anytime.  Sweet E’s Cafe is a cute little breakfast/brunch place located in Kapahulu.  It’s a nice place to eat but it is very busy and their parking lot is very very limited.  I had to parallel park on the street which I hate doing but it was well worth the effort!  On to the pictures!

What can I say? I'm a sucker for runny yolks...this was delicious! And you can definitely tell the corned beef hash was homemade.

This meal was a winner all around.  Homemade corned beef hash, how often do you find that in a restaurant?  The stuffed french toast?  I don’t even like french toast and I loved this dish.  I can’t wait to get back here to try more food, I just gotta get out here on a random weekday so it’s not so busy.  Definitely try this place out.

Eggs ‘n Things – Ala Moana

Eggs ‘n Things has been a breakfast institution in Hawai’i for years.  Unfortunately, I never got a chance to try them in Waikiki.  I hate to admit it but it takes a lot for me to try a place if they do not have good parking – I guess I could never make the jump.  They did however open a new location in Ala Moana about 6-7 months ago and I had to give it a try!  I saw that the reviews on Yelp were pretty bad against this place but I still wanted to try it myself!  While my experience wasn’t bad, it definitely was not good.  The prices for this place are expensive for the same portion and quality as other breakfast joints.

Corned Beef Hash ($9.95), nothing special - not worth the price

Sunrise Chicken (?) - the dish was okay, pricey

All in all, it was a pretty lackluster meal.  There were a lot of Japanese tourists around so maybe it is more of a tourist trap.  The food quality was not bad for my visit (although reviewers on Yelp might differ in opinion on their food) – I just don’t think it’s worth the price.

La Cucina Ristorante Italiana

When La Cucina Ristorante Italiana was opening up, I got really excited.  A lot of people in Hawaii are excited for an Olive Garden to open up in Hawaii but I don’t see what the big deal is.  The first time I got to try Olive Garden, I was super excited and thought everything was great!  Now that I’ve been to Olive Garden a few times, I am no longer a fan.  The last meal I had there was terrible and I will never forget it.

Anyhow, La Cucina Ristorante Italiana is very busy and they do not take reservations for less than 4 people.  This restaurant is also a one man kitchen so the wait for food takes a bit longer.  It’s a small space and there are only two tables against the wall that seat 2.  I went on a weekday right at 5:30 pm and got a table, thank god!  By the way, the street parking fronting these shops open up at 5:30 pm as well…I lurked around the corner until it was 5:30 pm exactly and made a run for it…lol.  Ohhh let’s get to the food pictures!

I can’t wait to get back to this restaurant and try more dishes.  I gotta admit, the difficulty in getting a table has prevented me from returning as of yet.  If you’re going to take your guest to any Italian restaurant in Hawaii, you need to get them to this restaurant.  I really want to try their Osso Buco but have read that you need to order this ahead of time and I assume they will only put in this order if you have a reservation.  So when you get together a table of four, do it!

Soondae

130609-1Can you tell what that is in the picture?  Well I sort of gave it away in the title of this post but for those who don’t know Korean, this is Korean blood sausage.  When I talk about blood sausage, I get the inevitable “ewww” from people.  That’s okay with me because all that means is…more for me!  I don’t know when I tried this first, but I love it.  If you look closely, you will see that it is filled with various innards and noodles!  Yum yum yum.  This sausage is usually served alongside a seasoning salt.  Even more yum…hehe.

Fishcake Kimbap

Fishcake Kimbap

Here is some delicious Fishcake Kimbap.  Both I got from Keeaumoku Supermarket.  The way they roll this kimbap is so beautiful.  So simple yet you know it takes so much preparation of different ingredients to create this one roll.  Totally worth the $4 in my opinion!

Hot Woks Cool Sushi in Chicago

I have been to Chicago twice in the past 2 years and may be going again near the end of the summer.  The first trip?  Strictly vacation.  I had a great time, the weather was brisk and I really got a feel for Chicago.  The second time was this past February to accompany my cousin to her Pharmacy School interview.  While this trip was unplanned, it could not have been more perfect!  One thing I have wanted to see in all my life was snow and this trip provided that.  Not only did I get to see and touch snow, on one of my last days, I actually got to see snow fall from the sky.  It really was a dream come true.  I’m sure I’ll post the snow pictures soon after this post.  It was pretty funny because when we checked into the hotel, I was told that it was a weird winter for Chicago and that this was the first snow they had all year!  Absolutely magical for this Hawaii girl.

Anyhow, I wanted to share some pictures from this restaurant with you.  I went to this restaurant on both trips and plan to go back if I go again!  When I look up the reviews for Hot Woks Cool Sushi, they are pretty mediocre.  This restaurant is also located right across the street from Cloud Gate so it is probably considered a tourist trap.  I don’t mind though – I’ve enjoyed both meals I had.

I also appreciate this restaurant for their clean bathrooms!  After exploring Cloud Gate and the park, it’s nice to settle into a warm and cozy restaurant for some good food and a restroom break.  I think I’ve had good food for both visits, nothing to complain about.  Check them out if you are out in Chicago!
