Angelo Pietro – Kaimuki, HI

Angelo Pietro moved to Kaimuki and while they are in a smaller space, the food remains the same! They sell their salad dressings in stores but my friend noticed they no longer sell the ume salad dressing in stores but they still serve it with their salads in the restaurants…so if you’re into ume, give them a visit!

Plantation Iced Tea

Meh, not sweet enough but they do allow you one free refill. Guess which Chinese person took advantage of that?

Pietro Rainbow Salad

This is a great salad, comes with greens, bell peppers, carrots, raw daikon, and raw potato strings. It comes with all four Angelo Pietro dressings!

Spaghetti Sukiyaki Style

Not my dish but I got a taste and it was nice! Definitely tasted like sukiyaki but with a slight buttery finish. Very good!

Pork and Eryngii Spicy Cream Sauce

This is my dish and I love it! I love the deep fried garlic on top..it adds a nice taste and crunch to the dish. My absolute favorite.

Recipe: Lemon Pudding Mochi with Fresh Blueberries

Earlier this week, I had this sudden craving for something lemon-y. Then I thought, gotta make something lemon with blueberry because they complement each other so well! I found a recipe for Lemon Pudding Mochi from the Honolulu Advertiser and it got started from there! The recipe by itself sounds and looks great already but I just had to play around with it to include the in-season blueberries (and Times had ’em on sale)! So I made adjustments to the recipe and created my own, no coconut (not a fan of shredded coconut) and pile on the blueberries! I was a bit scared of how it would turn out, baking is such a science and you just never know what will come out of the oven. Well, I made ’em, brought ’em to work, and everyone loved them! Including me. 🙂 The original recipe calls for lemon extract which I didn’t have so I used lemon zest…which I think actually makes the recipe better! First some pics…then the recipe!

Check it out guys…the mochi texture was PERFECT. Smooth and soft…with a wonderful brown crust on the sides. Wish I could have had this right out of the oven! The lemon flavor comes through perfectly.

Plump blueberries ready to eat! Much better than the canned kine, this recipe is already so sweet…it’s good to use fresh blueberries so you don’t make it sickly sweet.

I actually mixed the blueberries into the batter and was a bit afraid they would sink to the bottom. To my surprise, the blueberries floated all to the top! The batter of this is pretty thick so I think that’s why the blueberries went up to the top. Ahh…this recipe worked out so well! I almost wanted to keep it all to myself. 🙂

Lemon Pudding Mochi with Fresh Blueberries

Ingredients
16 ounces mochiko sweet rice flour (1 box)
2 ¼ cups sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 (3 ounce) box instant lemon pudding
2 cups coconut milk
1 cup 2% milk
1 (1/2 cup) package unsalted butter, melted
5 eggs, lightly beaten
3 lemons worth of finely grated lemon zest
9 oz. fresh blueberries (I used 1 ½ of those 6 oz. blueberry clamshells from the supermarket)

Directions
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Get a 13 x 9 glass pan.
In a large bowl, stir together sweet rice flour, sugar, baking powder, grated lemon and pudding.
With a balloon whisk, gradually whisk in coconut milk and dairy milk to beat out lumps.
One at a time, stir in melted butter, then the beaten eggs.
Gently stir in the blueberries.
Pour into baking dish.
Bake 1 hour or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

No real notes on this recipes, I put my ingredients and instructions as is! I hope you folks get to make it, let me know how it comes out if you do! Enjoy!

Bozu Japanese Restaurant – McCully, HI

I tried Bozu Japanese Restaurant for the first time last week and got hooked. I mean hooked, I went back to the restaurant three nights later. I’m not usually a night owl but for some odd reason, both visits were during their late night happy hour special which I believe starts at 9pm. While I did get one item of the late night menu, everything else was pretty much from their regular menu. They are located in the McCully Shopping Center on the 2nd floor, not hard to find especially since the 2nd floor is kind of empty. The staff there are all so friendly! The restaurant is filled with Japanese nationals but I got first rate service both nights. And as I left both nights, all the sushi chefs enthusiastically yelled their farewells and thank yous. Great food and service? Can’t miss! Here are the pictures.

Cold-style Chawan Mushi

Oh my god. If there is ever a dish to get here, THIS. IS. IT. The silky smoky smooth savory egg custard, a layer of some type of delicious gelatin, ikura, uni, crab meat, shiso leaf…it just all tastes so great. Perfect combination. Perfect dish. Trust me and get it.

Salmon Lovers Don (Late Night Happy Hour Special)

Great dish! Lots of good quality salmon and a mountain of ikura. It’s also a huge mountain of rice, but good quality seasoned rice. Delicious!

Powerful Natto (Tuna, Squid, Yam, Masago, Takuwan, Okura, and Quail Egg)

All I can say is, you better like natto or do not get this dish. I usually see this dish named as a stamina bowl or something in other restaurants. It’s a slimey gooey mess, the exact mess I’m into.

Bozu Special Roll

How do you go wrong with this roll? All the best fish and topped with ikura! The picture may be a bit misleading, this roll is HUGE. Definitely need to share it with a group.

Ika Shiokara Pasta

Oh boy, it was a nice dish to try but boy is it salty. It must be the shiokara that makes it sooo salty. It tastes pretty good but I don’t know if I would order it again. They do cook the pasta perfectly though!

Spicy Ahi with Taro Chips

Delicious! But I gotta say…this spicy ahi is definitely spicier than other places so if you can’t handle spice…I wouldn’t recommend it. I liked it though! I may have overkilled it with two visits in one week – but definitely plan to visit again!

Welcome Back?

Hi everyone! If there is anyone left reading this blog! Guess what? I officially finished grad school this past weekend. It was a long journey and I appreciate everyone who supported me. What did I do this past weekend? Sleep. Sleep. Sleep. And did I mention sleep? I also cleaned a lot. I couldn’t believe I cleaned, I thought I would just veg out. And the past two days were glorious, waking up without worrying about another paper to write? Amazing.

I certainly haven’t stopped eating out all this time! So I’ll gradually update my food adventures. Tonight, I had the urge to do some baking. Here’s a picture of it:

Can you guess what it is? Hint: It’s not cake! It was a totally improvised recipe. I’ll bring it to work tomorrow and if the verdict is good, I’ll for sure share the recipe! Look great though doesn’t it? Fresh blueberries!
